Adapting to New Dentures

Getting Comfortable With Your New Smile

It’s completely normal for new dentures to feel strange at first. As your cheeks, lips and tongue adjust, you may notice mild discomfort or awkwardness — this is part of the natural adaptation process. With the right guidance and a little practice, most people adjust far more quickly than expected.

At SA Precision Dentures, we recommend a review appointment within the first few days so we can make small adjustments and ensure your dentures feel as comfortable as possible.

What to Expect in the First Few Days

New dentures can affect how your mouth feels and functions. You may notice:

  • A feeling of “fullness” or something new in your mouth
  • Slight irritation as tissues adjust
  • Accidentally biting your cheeks or tongue
  • Extra saliva for the first day or two

These are temporary and should gradually improve.
If discomfort persists, we can adjust your dentures to relieve sore spots.

Learning to Chew Again

Chewing with new dentures takes practice. Start slowly:

  • Begin with small pieces of soft food
  • Chew using both sides of your mouth to keep the denture stable
  • Gradually introduce firmer foods as your confidence improves

With time, chewing will feel more natural and effortless.

Improving Your Speech

Some sounds may be difficult at first. This is normal and improves as your tongue learns the new shape of your mouth.

A helpful tip:

  • Read aloud, especially words that feel tricky
  • Repeat them until speaking feels smooth and clear

BPS Precision Dentures are designed for enhanced stability and accuracy, helping you speak comfortably much sooner.

Daily Oral Hygiene

Healthy gums and good oral hygiene help prevent irritation and support long-term comfort.

Each day:

  • Brush your gums, tongue and palate with a soft toothbrush
  • Clean your dentures thoroughly
  • Soak them overnight in a recommended cleansing solution

When cleaning your dentures, place a towel in the sink or fill it with water — this helps prevent damage if they slip from your hands.
